American roots music pianist, John Davis, performs early New Orleans keyboard works highlighted in The First Piano Professors and Lost Music of Early New Orleans, an exhibition curated by Davis that opened in April at The New Orleans Jazz Museum.   The African and Afro-Caribbean dances; Mardi Gras pieces; banjo imitations; voodoo pieces; and brass band marches Davis will play by the first generation of Crescent City keyboard composers anticipate the New Orleans jazz and rhythm & blues to come in the 20th century and survive in print thanks to a flourishing music publishing industry that once lined Canal Street. Many of these pieces have not been performed since the era of their composition.
