Interweave

Marietta Hoferer’s Interweave is delicate, translucent, and luminous are just a few words to describe Marietta Hoferer’s artwork. Operating intuitively, she creates geometric and rhythmic patterns inspired by the world around her. Changes in the weather and plants make a deep impression on her, as does the manmade order of architectural structures and woven fabrics. She explains, “I chose the title ‘Interweave’ as an idea to connect different threads, not only in a literal way of joining physical materials, but also weaving together thoughts, time, light, etc.”

Hoferer’s material expression is humble – paper, graphite, and tape – but the interplay of light and reflective surfaces dazzles, like sparkling snowflakes or glittering mosaics. The artist begins with a graphite grid on paper, and then cuts and places each piece of tape until patterns emerge. The work is intricate and labor intensive.

Born in Germany in 1962, Hoferer studied art at the St. Martins School of Art and Design in London (1990); completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Hunter College in New York (1993); and received a Master of Fine Arts from Hochschule der Künste in Berlin (1994). She has been awarded several artist residencies, including three at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, and grants, including two from Pollock-Krasner Foundation.

Hoferer has exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. Her work is in the collections of the Harvard Art Museums; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the University Art Museum, Albany, New York.
