Julia "Dudie" Baird

Julia Baird (1872-1932) was born in New York City, the youngest of William and Anna Baird's seven children. William's death at the age of forty-five probably precipitated Julia's early entry into the workforce. By the age of seventeen, "Dudie" had already posed for the figure of Diana. According to a New York Herald article of 1897, Julia Baird was New York's most famous artists' model, called upon to pose for Saint-Gaudens, Thomas Dewing, Kenyon Cox, Edwin Abbey, and many others who were drawn to Julia's down-to-earth personality and her ability to play whatever type of character an artist might call for.
