Saint-Gaudens often delighted his friends with caricatures. Many were pencil sketches of Saint-Gaudens himself, and exhibit a self-deprecating sense of humor about the sculptor’s long illness, or his pursuit of Art. He signed his name on personal correspondence with a caricature of his own profile. Other caricatures, rendered on paper or in clay, captured the character of  friends and family members.
